Border Reivers (raiders). Muster Roule (Roll) 1538 "North Tyndale Theiffs" (listed only men with a horse & sword) had these Leatherdales listed: Gybby, John, Rolland, Edmunde, Sandy, Thomas, Mathew and Davey.
Abt 1580 One clan migrated to the South, settling in Kings Lynn. They operated a thriving business as drovers, keeping contact with their Northern kin.
1585 William Leatherdale is buried at "Aldenburgh ( Aldborough) Suffolk" (from a fragment of Parish Records) Believed to be our line. (**TREE)
1589 & 1602 James Leatherdale 1589, will found. 1602 John son of James, will found. (No family lines found at this time)
1614 & 1615 Robert Lytherdale, son of William. Will found at Ipswich Consistory court. He first marries Alice then Mary. His occupation: yeoman (farmer). He had three sons. Francis (marries Margaret), believed to be the son of Alice. These sons are believe to be Mary's, Robert (b. 1586)m. Joan, 3. George (b. 1588). Robert dies at Hasilwood now known as Haselwood (2 miles from Aldenburgh)
Abt 1580 Francis Leatherdale son of Robert & Mary is born.
1631 Francis is found on the Suffolk muster role"
1632 Francis marries Margaret by licence. His occupation yeoman at Hasilwood. They have 8 children: *1. Thomas (b. abt 1633) m. Ann, 2. Daniel, 3. Francis (ancestor of the Leatherdales of Eye, Suffolk, Norfolk), 4. Robert, 5. Frances m. Edward Alden, 6. Margaret m. John Cornish, 7. Dorothy m. John Chambers, 8 daughter.
1640 Francis pays, 1-3.0 Ship money.
1656 Francis dies, will found dated 1650, Somerset House.
1658 *Francis wife Margaret dies, will found dated 1657, Somerset House. Mentions 4 sons & 4 daughters
1656 Thomas Leatherdale (Letherdale, Leatherdown), inherits all lands and tennants at Kelsale from father Francis. He marries Ann but the date is unknown. They have 2 sons: *1. Thomas (b. 1692) m Mary Revens, 2. Francis (b. 1693) m Elizabeth Arnold?. They both are born and marry at Kelsale. **At this time the thought is there is a missed generation because of the late age of Thomas having children. [One never knows for sure, the search goes on, but still is our direct line. I will keep you posted.]
1719 Thomas Leatherdale (Leatherdowne), son of Thomas & Ann marries Mary Revens in East Sweffing. They had a son *Thomas (b. 1720) m 1. Elizabeth Hacon 2. Dinah Kent.
1720 Francis Leatherdale, son of Thomas & Ann marries Elizabeth Arnold. They have six children: 1. Francis, 2. Richard, 3. Mary, 4. Elizabeth, 5 Sarah, 6. Hannah.
1750 Thomas Leatherdale, son of Thomas & Mary is born. He marries Elizabeth Hacon at Kelsale. They have a son Thomas (b. 1750) m. Elizabeth Whitmore in Chappel Essex.
1779 Thomas Leatherdale marries Elizabeth Whitmore at Wakes Colne. He farmed 62 acres at Bretts Green Farm. They have 8 children: 1. Thomas, 2. James, 3. John, 4. Lydia, 5. Abraham, 6., Isaac, 7. Phillip, 8. Luke.
1788 Elizabeth Hacon dies
1789 Thomas Leatherdale marries Dinah Kent (widow) at Kelsale. They have a son John (b. 1789)
1831 In December 1831 Thomas Leatherdale (son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hacon) dies and is buried at Chappel, a will found Essex R.O.
1841 Elizabeth Whitmore dies at Colchester is buried at Parish of St. Leonards.
1846 Joseph Leatherdale (nephew of James) and his wife Sarah West emigrate to Nasagowa Twp. near Guelph, Ontario, with their three daughters.
1850 21/5/1850 arrived in New York on the "Forest Queen", James Leatherdale (b 1782) his wife Elizabeth Rayment, 9 of their 12 children, 5 married with family emigrate to Galt, Ont. Canada.
